Background: diabetes mellitus has recently been included by the American Academy of Periodontology in a list of systemic diseases in which periodontal disease is a risk factor. Objective: to describe the behaviour of periodontal disease in diabetic children and adolescents in Holguín in 2019. Material and methods: an epidemiological, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in diabetic children and adolescents under the age of 19 who attended the Endocrinology Department of the Pediatric Hospital in the province of Holguin, from March to December 2019. The Russell Periodontal Index and the Love Oral Hygiene Index were applied. Age, sex, oral hygiene, prevalence and severity of periodontal disease and metabolic control were considered as variables. Data was fed into a Microsoft Excel® database. Statistical processing was performed using the SPSS version 15.0 program and chi-square statistical tests were applied. Results: the 15-18 year age group predominated together with the male sex. A highly significant dependence between oral hygiene and prevalence and severity of periodontal disease was found together with a strong association between metabolic lack of control and the presence of periodontal disease. Conclusion: there is a high prevalence of periodontal disease in diabetic children and adolescents with poor metabolic control in the province of Holguín.
